Since its foundation in 1970, IMAL has steadily expanded over the decades to become a world leader in the manufacture and supply of plants and machinery for particleboard, MDF and OSB panel processing. The company now specialises in a range of high-tech instruments and equipment for glue blending and quality monitoring, as well as the supply of complete part new/part reconditioned plants, accompanied by full guarantee. The IMAL head office and industrial unit are located in San Damaso (Modena), a small, quiet town located in Northern Italy, and just a handy 20 minutes’ drive from Bologna airport.
The Engineering division, which extends over a surface area of 600 m2, houses 20 CAD latest generation dual processor stations all equipped with 3D plant and machinery engineering systems and virtual simulation of the production process and operation. The electronics department is constantly seeking new ideas to create innovative products and alternatives to standard supplies, which are vital to remain competitive on the market and to produce original products and equipment.
The activities of the Software department mainly involve the development of the management software for the single machines, as well as the PLC automation and visualization of complete lines. The investments made in R&D, combined with the use of the most advanced technology available today, have undoubtedly contributed much to IMAL’s success. The company is fully computerized and PC network linked to provide fully integrated solutions.
As well as being certified ISO 9001, various products of IMAL’s range have also been TUV certified by the prestigious Munich Institute in Germany. Imal has designed and patented machines and technical solutions to improve the production process of wood-based panels and other innovative products (such as pallet blocks). About 1/5 of its employees have a technical degree and a group of engineers is dedicated to research both on products and the work process. Innovations designed for quality control equipment and testing have expanded and extended Imal’s knowledge and skills within this particular industrial sector, and have enabled the company to convey this knowhow within the company itself and to the market as well.

TStarting in the mid-1950s, IBL began expanding in the wood-panel industry; in just a few years, the Panel Division endowed itself with a sound organisation and today counts three companies in Italy with production facilities and offices in various European countries. IBL cut poplar trees, machine the timber and transform every part into panels, from the simplest sawn to rotary-cut veneer up to multiply and semi-finished products. IBL have heavily invested in technology and as a result IBL is the best supplier of the furniture industry. Currently, the poplar cultivation assets cover almost 50% of its needs. IBL is also focused on the environment: 99% of the timber we use comes from special cultivated areas, where the trees are always replanted. The so-called noble woods are used to a very small extent for facing. All over the world, already more than 140 low-temperature belt driers without heat recycling system were set into operation for the drying of sawdust. These belt driers have a capacity of 5,000,000 t/a all together.

Fundación para el Progreso del Soft Computing
The European Centre for Soft Computing is a young R&D centre created with the purpose of serving as a world-class institution focused on basic and applied research in the area of soft computing, and on the transference of technology by means of industrial applications of intelligent systems to solve real-world problems. Launched in mid-2006 and supported by a private non-profit foundation, the Centre has rapidly become a meeting point for worldwide experts and young researchers.
Currently, the Centre has 45 employees including 28 international researchers structured in five research units. The total budget of the ECSC in its fourth operational year (2009) was approximately of 2 million euros. Its intense research activity is reflected by means of more than 20 R&D projects that currently are ongoing at the different research units, whether supported by national authorities or in collaboration with companies of different sectors. Within the 7FP the ECSC coordinates the MIBISOC Marie Curie ITN, the International Incoming Fellowship COLLISEUS, and the COST Action IC0702 (with more than 20 partners from 18 countries) as well as it participates in the BISON FP7 ICT Future and Emerging Technologies STREP project.
The motivation for creating the ECSC is based on the vision of Soft Computing research as a high potential tool for innovation and economic development.
